HONORS

Traditionally an infant is ushered to the room of the circumcision by the kvatterin and kvatter. Sometimes, the kvatter and kvatterin are a couple who are trying to have a baby of their own, though this is not brought to people’s attention. Otherwise they can be any persons related or unrelated whom you wish to honor. You may also choose godparents and ask me to include them in the ceremony.

The Sandek is given the highest honor; that of holding the baby on the pillow and giving him wine, while the circumcision takes place. Keep this in mind when you make your choice. While often times grandfathers get this honor, there is also a tradition that this honor be given to a well-known sage or learned person. The role can be given to two people to share.

There are numerous ways to involve more people in your celebration if you wish. One example is the European custom of lighting candles in honor of the baby that burn during the service. Feel free to call me to discuss honors at any time during your road to being a parent.
